Take Home final

1. What are the advantages of using the two cassette system on VO/SOTs?

As an alternative, many news operations place the VO and the SOT on separate tapes. That gives the director a little more time for dealing with discrepancies in how long it takes to read a VO. By putting the SOT on a separate tape, they can wait until the anchor is finished reading the VO (with no one distracting her/him by talking into their ear while they are trying to read) and then transition the tape. The same guidelines about including pad video are true if the SOT is on a separate tape.

2. What are the three things that the lead‑in to a sound bite should accomplish?

A well-written story will contain three lead-in basics, which starts with, the writer capturing the essence of the story in the lead. Second, the copy itself doesn’t sound like it’s been written at all. It will sound, like a one side conversation, exactly as if the anchor or reporter is talking to someone, rather than at someone. Finally, the writer presents the fact in narrative storytelling format.

3. Define SOT.

SOT (sound on tape) - Interview sound, recorded on tape or disk, to be used in a broadcast news story.

4. What is unique about putting together a TV newscast, related to other forms of journalism?

Three things that are unique about putting a TV newscast together other than other formas of journalism are the graphics, artwork and visual placing.

5. What are the two parts of a standard lower‑third super?

The lower third is a graphic placed at the lower end of the television screen. They using are white with a drop shadow and they can also contain graphics.

6. Define outcue.

Outcue- The final few words of a story element not being read by an anchor (bite, package, wrap, and so forth).

1. What are some problems that can arise when you’re writing to file footage?

One problem that can arise is the tape does not match the new script one may have have written.

2. List two reasons for airing a story as a VO rather than in a lengthier format.

VO’s work better because for one they help the producer vary the pace of the show, secondly they allow the news team to deliver useful info in a short form. For example VO’s work very well when the news team covers events and a comment from someone at the event really wouldn’t add too much to the story so a VO can help.

3. Define "hyperkinetic."

Hyperkinetic-

4. Define “reader.”

Reader- A short television story read by an anchor with no accompanying video or full screen graphic.

5. Define “slug.”

Slug- Brief title assigned to a news story

6. Define "reader/actuality."

Reader/Actuality- A type of radio story in which the anchor reads the opening copy for the story, plays a cart or disk (which is the audio recording of the actuality sound bite), and then reads the closing copy.

7. Define "wrap."

Wrap- A type of radio story that includes the anchor lead and a voiced report from a reporter along with an actuality (sound bite); a “wrap” is the radio equivalent of news package in television.

1. List four tips to keep in mind when conducting (not shooting) an interview.

Never chew gum, always have direct eye contact, don’t fidget with your notes or play with your hair, and finally don’t wave the microphone around. You want to be direct straight forward and clear but yet respectful. You want to ask precise questions.

2. In an interview, save the tough questions for later.

True

1. First Amendment expert Gregg Thomas says a news operation that liberally uses the word “alleged” is practicing condom journalism.

2. What is an alternative to using the word “alleged?”

Suspects can be used as an alternative to alleged.

3. What is required for a journalist to be able to correctly use the word “suspect?”

A journalist is required to use the term suspect when the person has been named, jailed, or wanted in a connection for a specific act.

The US economy is finally getting back into gear. The U.S. economy grew at a 3.5% annual rate in the third quarter, ending a string of declines over four quarters that resulted in the most severe slide since the Great Depression. But some economists raised doubts about how long such strong growth can last. The increase in GDP, reported by the government Thursday morning, was slightly better than expectations. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast 3.2% growth in gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the nation's economic activity. The economy shrank at a 0.7% rate in the second quarter. The positive GDP report is one more sign that the economy has likely pulled out of the deep recession that started in December 2007.

PLAINFIELD -- A 20-year-old accused of murder took the stand during a pretrial hearing today to argue that his Miranda rights were violated. Willie Greene is one of five men accused in the 2007 beating death of Lazaro Tista, a Guatemalan immigrant from Plainfield. Before Superior Court Judge James Heimlich, Greene testified that he was arrested and aggressively interrogated by police without his lawyer present. The baby-faced defendant, with long sideburns and a small goatee, said his learning disability makes it difficult to understand what he reads. "I didn’t fully comprehend what they meant by ‘you have the right to remain silent,’" Greene testified today, as he rested his handcuffed hands on the witness stand. "I just went along with it and signed the paper, even though I didn’t understand." His defense attorney, Roy Greenman, argued his client has a low I.Q. and his family told police they intended to hire a lawyer to represent him. Authorities were able to convince Greene to give a statement about an hour before his lawyer contacted police, Greenman said. Assistant Prosecutor Michael Henn said police acted appropriately during the arrest and interrogation, and a videotape of Greene’s statement shows his testimony in court was not credible.

UNION TOWNSHIP -- An Elizabeth man staggered into a township diner bleeding after he was shot in the face in a county-owned park Monday night, police said. Union Township police received a 911 call from University Diner on North Avenue at 5:45 p.m. Monday. Union Township police Captain Scott Breslow said the victim collapsed after entering the restaurant. After administering aid to the wounded man, police "followed a trail of blood from the diner" to Ursino Park. The park, located on the intersection of North and Morris avenues, sits across from Kean University, the Liberty Hall Museum and another piece of county-owned land, Phil Rizzuto park. A spokeswoman for Kean University's police department said thevictim was not a student.

The Washington City Council voted Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriage in the nation's capital. The bill was approved overwhelmingly by a vote of 11-2. The bill will be given to Mayor Adrian Fenty, who has expressed his support and vowed to sign the bill. If the mayor signs it, Congress will have 30 days to intervene before it would take effect. It is considered unlikely that the Democratic majority on Capitol Hill will block the bill.

Tuesday's second vote was needed to send the measure to Fenty. The council passed the bill in an 11-2 vote December 1. If the measure becomes law, Washington will join Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa in allowing legal same sex marriages. A law legalizing gay marriage in New Hampshire takes effect January 1.

An American father said he hopes to be bringing his 9-year-old son home from Brazil on Thursday after a long international custody battle that has involved U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and many Brazilian courtrooms. A Brazilian court on Wednesday ordered that the boy, Sean Goldman, be returned to the custody of his father in the United States. The father, David Goldman, spoke to CNN's "American Morning" on Thursday shortly after his plane touched down in Brazil."I hope that this is the last trip I'll have to come down here," Goldman said. In an earlier conversation with CNN's Anderson Cooper, Goldman said, "I hope this time I will be able to go down to Brazil and come back home with my son. Hopefully the rule of law, god, nature, human decency will be followed, and Sean will come home to reunite with me, his only parent."The Federal Regional Tribunal's 3-0 ruling in Rio de Janeiro upheld a decision in June by the 16th Federal Court in Rio, which ordered Sean returned to his home with his father in New Jersey in accordance with the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

Investigators probing the June crash of an Air France flight in the Atlantic Ocean still do not know what brought the plane down, who was at the controls when it crashed, or what the pilots did in the moments leading up to the disaster, according to a new report released Thursday."At this stage ... it is still not possible to understand the causes and circumstances of the accident," investigators said in the report. Flight 447 -- an Airbus A330 -- went down in stormy weather in the Atlantic Ocean June 1 while flying from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France. All 228 people on board were killed. Most of the bodies were never recovered. France's air accident investigation agency, the BEA, released its second interim report into the crash Thursday. It had been planning a news conference at the same time, but canceled it because of snow in Paris. The plane hit the water belly first, essentially intact, studies of the debris and the bodies that have been recovered show. Oxygen masks were not deployed, indicating that the cabin did not depressurize, the report said. Automated messages sent from the plane in the minutes before the crash showed there were problems measuring airspeed, the investigators said.

BRIDGEWATER NJ -- The principal at Bridgewater Raritan High School made a plea to students today to stop texting rumors about a possible attack on the school in hopes of calming a school community on edge since the arrest of a junior in an alleged bomb plot last week. "Let me assure you, I value my life as much as you value your life," Riccobono said. "I would not come to school, or ask you to come to school if I felt that our safety was jeopardized."A strong police presence will continue to remain at the school throughout the week and be evaluated on a day-to-day basis next week.

ATLANTIC CITY -- Two men convicted in a videotaped sex sting of an Atlantic City councilman are going to prison. A judge today sentenced Ronald Callaway to nine years behind bars. He'll be eligible for parole after four. Floyd Tally was sentenced to 12 years, with parole eligibility in six. The judge told the men the crime perpetuates Atlantic City politics as "a dirty business." Tally and Callaway were found guilty of conspiracy, criminal coercion and invasion of privacy. The charges involved the clandestine videotaping in 2006 of Councilman Eugene Robinson. The Baptist minister was lured to a motel and received oral sex from a prostitute hired by the defendants and the mastermind of the scheme, former Council President Craig Callaway.

President Obama met Tuesday with Senate Democrats and emerged to say Congress was "on the precipice" of passing a sweeping health care reform bill.

"There are some differences that still have to be worked on," Obama said after talks with Democrats trying to push their bill through the Senate. But "there is broad consensus around [a set of] reforms." Obama spoke after Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman indicated he was prepared to back reform legislation on condition that the bill drops both a controversial government-run public health insurance option and a provision allowing 55- to 64-year-olds to buy into Medicare. If the public option and Medicare buy-in are removed from the bill, "then I'm going to be in a position where I can say ... that I'm ready to vote for health care reform," Lieberman told reporters on Capitol Hill. In a later interview with CNN, Lieberman said he was "moving very much in the direction of saying yes, pending just seeing what I've been told is happening with the bill." An independent who caucuses with the Democrats, Lieberman has emerged as the main obstacle to the majority party's efforts to get the health care bill passed by the Senate before Christmas. He threatened over the weekend to join a GOP filibuster if the legislation contains either the public option or the Medicare expansion.

In a strong blow to one of Mexico's most notorious drug cartels, Mexico's navy killed a top drug kingpin in a shootout Wednesday at an upscale resort. Arturo Beltran Leyva, head of the Beltran Leyva cartel, was killed in the Mexican city of Cuernavaca, the navy said. His brother, who was known as Mario Alberto Leyva or Hector Leyva, also was killed, according to the navy. He also was a top leader of the cartel. Five other cartel members also died in the gun battle at a housing complex called "Altitudes," navy spokesman Adm. Jose Luis Vergara said Thursday. He added that one of the gang members killed himself as authorities closed in. Three navy personnel were wounded by hand grenades, one fatally, President Felipe Calderon said. Navy 3rd Petty Officer Melquisedet Angulo Cordova died while being treated for his injuries, he said. One of the other two navy men was in serious condition and the other was in stable condition, Vergara said. The Beltran Leyva cartel is one of the most violent and feared drug organizations in Mexico. Authorities presented to the media three people -- two women and a man -- who were arrested in the raid. Their role with the cartel was not made clear.

The arrested women were identified as Catalina Castro Lopez and Gabriela Vega Perez. The man's name was not immediately released. Arturo Beltran Leyva was one of Mexico's top three most-wanted criminals, Calderon said. "This operation was the result of an intense intelligence effort by the Mexican navy," he said.

In entertainment news Chris Brown seemed a little contained Tuesday night at the Nokia Theatre stop of his Fan Appreciation Tour. Though he put on a clinic of showmanship, it was nothing like the huge, explosive shows to which he's grown accustomed. While some critics say it was too soon after Brown's assault on Rihanna to put an album, let alone tour, the singer still has a sizeable fanbase that spans from grown grandma-age women to little children. Regardless of the size of the venue, Brown still had a sold-out concert in the world's largest media market.
